Dear Community Members,
School Board Elections will be held on April 4th, 2023. All school boards in the State of Illinois consist of seven board members. Each local board has its own requirements about where in the district board members should come from and how many board members can be from a certain area, township, etc. The Annawan School Board currently operates under a restriction of a maximum of three board members from any one of our nine congressional townships with the exception of Alba, which may have a maximum number of two board members.
As we move toward the April general election, the Annawan School Board has six current board memberships up for reelection. We have had only five candidates express interest in filling these spots. Following the April election, the Board will be one board member short for a two-year term. Having a full school board is vital to the operation of a school district and helps ensure action can be taken on items by avoiding a tie vote, which could lead to a stalemate and inaction. In these cases where there are not enough candidates to fill the board vacancy, board members may be appointed by the newly elected board. The new board has 45 days to fill this vacancy before turning the task over to the Regional Superintendent of Schools.
I believe it is vital to every district that decisions about how it operates remain as local as possible. Therefore, in a preemptive attempt to garner interest in our open board seat, I am asking anyone who lives in the townships of Alba, Mineral, Gold, Burns, Cornwall, Kewanee, Loraine, or Yorktown and has a sincere desire to serve the children of our district to consider applying for an appointment on the board. Annawan township currently has its maximum of three board members.
