High School English Field Trip

This field trip coordinates with our Spoon River Anthology Unit.  The Spoon River Anthology contains several epitaphs based on real people that Masters, the author of the book, knew from his small town in Sangamon County.

After we finished the anthology, students went on the field trip to see various graves and cemeteries.  They had to write down information about each grave, like the name, anything unique about the grave, dates, writing on the stone, etc.  They used this information to create their own epitaphs about the names and information found on the graves.

Once they had their epitaphs written, they presented them to the class, and they explained the theme that each epitaph had.
